Inside 800 West Fulton: A Tour of High-Performance Design
Join Illinois Green Alliance as we explore the design and high-performance features of 800 West Fulton in Chicago's Fulton Market Neighborhood.
The tour begins along the edge of the Fulton-Randolph Historic District to showcase how the project is carefully proportioned to relate to the rhythm and scale of the historic low-rise streetscape, while connecting to the higher-density commercial district to the north. Inside, the tour will continue through the main lobby, mezzanine, and second level amenities, where a mix of retail, community and conferencing spaces, a fitness center, and lounge activate the space. The group will visit an office floor where the unique structural system enables large, open floor plates and flexible, daylight-filled workspaces. The tour will highlight key elements, including the facade, landscaped terraces, and mechanical systems, and how they contributed to the LEED Platinum rating. The tour concludes in the rooftop lounge and landscaped green roof with panoramic views of downtown and Fulton Market.
About the 800 West Fulton Project.
800 Fulton Market is a mixed-use office building that marks the gateway to one of Chicago’s most dynamic neighborhoods. The building rises in stepped terraces that create generous, landscaped outdoor spaces with native planting and trees. The dynamic and varied facade enlivens Fulton Market Street, while achieving a slender profile from the east and west. The architecturally expressed structure marks the office entrance along the west elevation of the podium, while a composition of brick, glass, and dark metal paneling relates to the existing industrial neighborhood character. Continuing SOM’s legacy of structurally expressive architecture, the building is defined by its X-braced facades on the east and west elevations that are engineered with Chicago’s harsh winters in mind.
