Passive Building Envelope and HVAC Design Across Building Types

Join Illinois Green Alliance for an in-depth exploration of how Passive House principles can be applied across a wide range of building types—from healthcare facilities and warehouses to schools and manufacturing plants. This program will highlight how passive design strategies, when combined with innovative mechanical engineering solutions, can significantly enhance building performance, occupant comfort, and long-term operational efficiency.

Drawing from real-world case studies, Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC) engineers and architects will demonstrate how these energy-efficient strategies can be adapted for different climates, shapes, and uses. Participants will learn how collaboration between architecture and engineering disciplines enables cost-effective, scalable sustainability outcomes—showing that the most sustainable project is the one that actually gets built.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply passive building principles across different building types, sizes, shapes, and climates.
  • Integrate design concepts and values that respond to diverse client, user, and occupant needs.
  • Analyze case studies demonstrating effective implementation of passive building strategies in various design contexts.
  • Evaluate energy-efficient envelope and HVAC technologies appropriate for different building types.

Speakers:

  • Joseph Gettemy, Mechanical Engineer, Shive-Hattery
  • Al Mitchell, Building Scientist & Certification Manager, Phius
