Retrofit & Revitalize Chicago: A Lawndale 2-Flat Case Study
Join Illinois Green Alliance for a virtual education program that will dive into the process for implementing comprehensive upgrades to existing buildings through deep energy retrofits. Our presenter will explore how to tackle common issues in aging structures in order to achieve substantial improvements in their long-term energy use, extending their lives while preserving their architectural history.
Using a traditional Chicago two-flat as a case study, this presentation offers an actionable guide for transforming older buildings into high-performance structures, starting with the most energy-consuming elements rather than the low-hanging fruit. You'll gain valuable insights into solutions that not only enhance occupant comfort and health but also significantly lower long-term operating costs and increase property value. This session will be useful for anyone looking for ways to start the process of modernizing small commercial or residential buildings.
In this session you’ll learn to:
- Identify air leakage points and select insulation and window technologies to improve thermal efficiency.
- Evaluate high-efficiency mechanical systems, including heat pumps, for retrofit applications.
- Apply Passive House principles to enhance air tightness, indoor air quality, and moisture control in historic existing buildings.
- Assess the cost-benefit of deep energy retrofit strategies by integrating mechanical systems with envelope design.
