Why are clean buildings and energy efficiency important?
Energy bills across the state have already begun to rise and maintaining the status quo could double consumer’s energy bills as fuel costs and system maintenance costs are predicted to skyrocket. Additionally, reducing the energy demand from buildings strengthens energy grid reliability. By reducing energy demand in buildings, you are putting less stress on the grid, making it more reliable and resilient.
In addition, air pollution in homes and buildings are responsible for a number of public health issues, releasing pollutants such as benzene, a known carcinogen. These pollutants are also directly linked to over 21% of the childhood asthma cases in Illinois.
Local Governments play a crucial role in addressing health, efficiency, and affordability of buildings in their community. Local governments can take action through high performance energy codes, transparent utility policy, and constituent education about incentives and rebates
